Is barbecue food really healthy

01 Why you should avoid barbecue food?

When it comes to weight loss diet, we are often instructed to avoid deep fried food and indulge in grilled or barbecued food. And we as blind followers of ‘healthy diet fad’, end up exposing the body to dangerous health problems. Once such food trend, that may be dangerous for the human body is- Barbecue Food. We all know that meat contains creatine, an organic acid that helps supply energy used by muscle cells. When the meat is cooked on a barbecue, the chemical reaction turns creatine into a group of compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and there are evidences that these compounds cause cancer when they are consumed in high concentrations.

02 Barbecue food is dangerous?

While frying and grilling meat also produces HCAs but barbecues tend to produce excess HCA, because of direct heat and the cooking technique. The charring process leads to a higher level of HCA that is considered bad for the human body.

03 It’s all in the technique

As compared to grilling and other cooking techniques, a barbecue heats the food (meat) from below and as the fat from the food drips onto the hot coals, it burns, and the smoke rises up and coats the food again. It has been tested that this smoke contains lots of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the partially burned fat. And we all know, PAHs are another group of chemicals that are known to cause cancer.

04 Harmful effects of barbecue food

The studies have shown that regular consumption of barbecue food is linked with health risk. So far most of the studies have linked HCAs and PAHs to risk of cancer. At many places, people don’t eat barbecue food because of the health risk involved. However, experts suggest that eating barbecue food once in a while will not cause any threat.

05 What’s the solution?

According to a report published in the Harvard Health Letter, you can make the barbecued food safe and reduce the level of carcinogens by 90 per cent if you follow a simple rule. It has been proven that if you pre-cook the meat in the microwave for 2 minutes and the place it on the barbeque for favour, it is safe for human consumption.

06 Verdict

Simply following a food fad is not the solution to healthy living. You need to understand the pros and cons of the trend and also observe the effects on your body and then make it a part of your lifestyle.
